Learn MoreThe sloop Providence, initially known as Katy, was part of a fleet owned by John Brown of Providence, Rhode Island. Dating back to 1769, the ship’s recorded voyages reveal its versatile use as a merchant ship, privateer, and whaler during its early years.
In 1966, a young Harvard graduate in Rhode Island named John Fitzhugh Millar became aware of the approaching American Bicentennial. Noticing that few people were acknowledging this significant milestone, Millar believed that Newport, being a maritime hub and the catalyst for the establishment of the Continental Navy, should contribute to the upcoming national celebration by emphasizing the maritime aspect of Revolutionary history.
Fantastic 4th of July sunset sail! The crew was so knowledgeable and friendly. They made sure everyone was safe and having a good time. And when I left my iphone on the ship, the crew immediately contacted my emergency contacts and made sure it was returned safe and sound!

Captain and crew were awesome! Set sail down the Potomac and back again, asking as many historical questions as your heart desires. It is a modernized version of the original so a small motor may move you before they let loose the sails. Don't worry - there is no plank to be forced on and plenty of life jackets for all.

A must stop. If you are looking for something to do, you found it right here.... To hear the stories, information and actually tour the ship was amazing. They did a great job at keeping in their roles during the tour and answered all kinds of questions.
