24 Sep Sea Shanty September: Haul Away Joe
This #TallShipTuesday, Providence’s Shanty Singers decided to end Sea Shanty September with one of their favorite shanties. This song is commonly referred to as a “short-drag shanty,” or a shanty that is used for tasks that need a short pull followed by a period of rest, like hauling line to set a sail. The song dates back to the late 18th or early 19th century, but became popular sometime between the war of 1812 and the American Civil War.
