Warner Joins the Marine Corps (Reserves)
After serving in Korea as a ground aircraft maintenance officer, he continued to serve in the Marine Corps Reserves where he reached the rank of Captain.
John Warner Graduates Law School
Warner attended Washington and Lee for his undergrad, then attended the University of Virginia Law School. After taking classes at George Washington University, he received his degree from UVA.
Nixon Appoints Warner Under Secretary of the Navy
Warner served until 1972 when he became Secretary of the Navy and then appointed Director of the American Revolution Bicentennial Administration.
US Senator Warner
Warner first ran for senate in 1978 beating the former Attorney General of Virginia, Andrew P. Miller. He served until January 3rd, 2009. He was one of the longest serving Senators in Virginia History
Across the Aisle
Warner was not hesitant to go against the grain. As a Republican Senator, he was a supporter of gun control, stem cell research, protections for LGBT folks, and many other things. One of his major accomplishments included socialized healthcare for veterans.
Warner’s Death
At his home in Alexandria, a place he considered his hometown, Warner passed away. President Joe Biden, Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, and Admiral Michael Mullen spoke at his funeral.
