14 Oct Alexandria Waterfront’s Favorite Tall Ship Opens Again!
After a few hiccups, the Coast Guard finally inspected Providence and she passed with flying colors! The Alexandria Waterfront’s favorite tall ship opens again for the remainder of the season and into the winter for regular programming. We are thrilled to be able to welcome our community back aboard.

2025 Programming
While we have had to pivot our programming from sailing to dockside, we are excited that this allows us to activate the ship and our Maritime Heritage Center in new ways. Our staff have created some incredible informational signs that are installed around the ship. We are also working on more ways to activate our dock and get folks onboard Providence FOR FREE! Come aboard for our free deck tours or watch our award winning short film in our theater on a daily basis (except Mondays), Don’t forget about our 5-star rated Living History Tours which we will continue on Saturday mornings.
Shanty Sing
We have been lucky enough to have Ship’s Company Chanteymen lead a monthly Shanty Sing at the Maritime Heritage Center over the last few months to great success! We have had two sold out events. One of our guests described the Shanty Sing saying, “The vibes are electric!” If you have ever wondered what all the hype around sea shanties are, check out our Shanty Sing schedule and join us!
Halloween Howl
Our yearly tradition of children’s fun and games at the Senator John Warner Maritime Heritage Center continues this year on October 25th. Kids are $20 and adults get in free, so get dressed up in your best costume and get ready for some Halloween fun for the whole family!

Repairs
The crew of Providence is hard at work with our routine maintenance and making big plans to the repairs of our ship. We completed Phase One of our project early this summer, and November marks the start of Phase Two. Now that we know what has to happen with all of our rigging, it is time to learn more about what is happening below the surface. We are making another trip up to Georgetown Maryland to haul out the ship. We expect Providence to be away for most of November and the beginning of December.

School Groups
School is back in session and we are steadily welcoming our school groups aboard Providence. Our newly developed Middle School Field Trip had its first testers and we have received some rave reviews. Middle Schoolers come aboard and learn about history and civics with our living historians and incredible facilitators. If your school is interested in coming aboard for one of these new programs, please let us know!
We have also begun welcoming students from our Field Trip Program to huge success! This program welcomes 4th graders from across the DMV from Title One Schools (schools in under resourced communities) aboard our ship for a Field Trip. Thank you to all of the donors to our Field Trip Program- we would not have been able to do any of this without your support. Please consider giving as we transition into the giving season.
New Speaker Series!
Tall Ship Providence is excited to partner with the Naval Order of the United States to start a new monthly speaker series in early November! Stay tuned for more information on our social media and website soon!
We look forward to all the new and exciting things coming up this fall and over the winter, and we can’t wait to see you aboard!
