About Providence

Tall ship Providence provides a living link to our rich maritime, naval, and Revolutionary history. Our Providence is a reproduction of the first ship authorized to serve in the Continental Navy and Captain John Paul Jones’ first American command.

Come aboard and get a taste of what life was like aboard an eighteenth-century sloop. Enjoy a tour, a cruise of the Potomac, or book a private event aboard Providence.

Tall Ship Providence Foundation

Formed in 2017 to purchase and restore the Tall Ship Providence, the organization began with two founders and a group of interested business people who eventually formed the Board of Directors. Tall Ship Providence Foundation is a 501c3 organization dedicated to preserving Alexandria’s rich maritime history through educational programs and entertainment. The restoration work on the ship, from the initial plan through the final touches, was accomplished under the expert guidance of Master Shipwright Leon Poindexter.

Clair Sassin serves as the President & CEO. Today the team includes Captain Jonathan Fay, Manager of Marine Operations; Will Downing, Manager of Operations; and Cleon McMillan, Manager of Sales and Events; and Jeremy Lawrence. Our team of Historical Interpreters welcomes the public and brings the history of the ship to life, and our crew of professional and volunteer sailors helps Captain Jonathan sail the ship, keeping the safety and enjoyment of Providence‘s guests in mind at all times.
